Now more than ever, we long for a genuine connection to a place—to its nature and to the craft of its making. Pine House, completed in 2024, is a summer retreat on the Hallandsåsen ridge that fosters this connection. The home reflects a layering of authentic experiences, with its form guided by the rhythms of daily life, honest craftsmanship, and the character of the landscape.
The surrounding nature, the spirit of the whole place is quite interesting and unique. The home is situated on a north-facing slope, in itself an unusual place for a summer cabin, within a sparse forest that used to be grazing land. The interplay of filtered light through the trees creates moments of intense atmosphere, where the sun rarely shines directly but the landscape constantly shifts in tone and texture. “I couldn’t imagine designing any building without trying to channel the energy of the place,” Johan reflects.
Pine House was developed in close collaboration with the clients, resulting in a unique process shaped by their sensitivity to the depth of aesthetics. Their attention goes beyond visual appearance to consider how objects are made, who made them, the significance of their form, their cultural associations, and the feelings they evoke. Well versed in culture, art, architecture, and many other fields, the clients made presenting ideas both a pleasure and a challenge.
We knew they would engage with not just the practical aspects, but also the emotional and conceptual intentions behind our proposals. When they questioned an idea or wanted to develop it further, we knew it would be in an interesting direction, often breathing more life into the project. At the same time, we had to establish core principles for the interiors—material palettes, curated objects, and handmade details—so the house could hold together as a coherent whole.
The home celebrates authenticity and tactile experiences, with the wooden construction fully visible and every handmade detail becoming part of the experience. The natural character of the materials and the visible structure contribute to the narrative of the house, offering richness and depth that mirrors the textures and rhythms of the surrounding forest.
